Computer Tip of the Month

April 2000

A lovely and close friend of mine suggested that I warm up the tip of the month a little, so since Vanessa suggested this great idea I will use her name to refer to what I feel is the normal computer user.

Computer user profile,

Uses a computer for years and feels that the computer is a essential part of their life even if it is a stupid box of XX@!#

All I want is for the computer to work – I want to leave the technical stuff the techies and watch them pull out a their hair (is that what happened to me?)

I know that the computer is possessed, but Bill G. is still alive.

Tip of the Month

Vanessa is worried about her computer, after installing all to Microsoft’s latest updates and all of her newest & coolest software that will improve the quality of her life in a way she never expected. She now she has a problem- the computer does not always shut down and after re-powering it scandisk runs and the displays the following " Because Windows was not properly shut down, one or more of the disk drives may have errors on it. To avoid seeing this message again, always shut down your computer by selecting Shut down from the Start Menu".

This can be a complex problem, but lets try to make it simple.

Press ctrl-Alt-del

When then task bar come up with a list of program routines running in the background, note the selections. We need to shut down each one, except explorer and systray, once all programs are shut down the system will now is able to shut down properly. One-click schedules to program to shut off, a double click causes the program to shut off immediately. Double click on a program, if it comes up with warning that the program or routine is not responding make a note of it and select end. Any program that is not responding is a potential cause for the shut down problem. Continue shutting down the programs until only explorer and systray are left and then shut down the computer in the normal way.

The shut down problem is due to a program running in the background that is not functioning properly. Windows try’s to shut down programs running in the background and if one or more background running programs are not responding then windows waits for what seems forever, and sometimes it does wait forever. By manually shutting down each program module Windows no longer looks to shut down that program module, and does not have to wait for a response from an unresponsive of malfunctioning bit of software.

If  Vanessa can isolate which program is causing the computer to hang by selecting each one in turn and shutting down the computer to see which one is causing the system to hang up on shut down. She then can call the software manufacturer and complain to them and hopefully get a fix. Of course she could simple uninstall the software and not use it.
