Computer Tip of the Month
March 2000Many people are afraid of installing new software onto their computer. Most manufacturers will advise you that the only assured way to install software is to shut down all applications that run in the background. While this can be true. I have never seen a software manufacturer give the consumer a sure way of doing this.
So here it is
1. Before installing any software hold down the Ctrl key, while holding down the Ctrl key press and hold down the Alt key, while holding down the Ctrl & the Alt keys press the Delete key. You will see a window labeled "Close Program". Release all keys. This is also called the task window, It lists all the programs that are running in the background under Win95/98/NT. Win NT appears different but is essentially the same.
2. Normally the only programs that you must have running in the background are Explorer and Systray. You can stop the other programs by highlighting them with the mouse and clicking on the "end Task button", this does not remove them, but it does stop them from running until you reboot the computer. Some software may take a while to shut down, or may come up with a second window requesting you the wait or end task. I usually shut down the program immediately by clicking on "end task".
3. Repeat 1 and 2 until all the entries are removed except for Explorer & Systray.
4. Install your software and reboot or restart the computer and all your programs will be restarted, and your new software should be installed just fine.
